Achevé en 1628 sous le règne de Louis XIII, ce Palais fut un lieu politique important. Il abrita entre autres le Comité de Salut public entre 1792 et 1794, ainsi que le gouvernement provisoire de Lafayette après la chute de Charles X en 1830.
Le 28 mars 1871, après la défaite de Napoléon III contre la Prusse, le peuple de Paris s'insurge contre le régime et envahit l'Hôtel de Ville. C'est le début de la Commune. Les insurgés en furent rapidement chassés. Cependant, durant la semaine sanglante (22-28 Mai), un certain nombres de monuments Parisiens seront délibérément incendiés par les Communards et en particulier tout ceux qui possédaient un rapport avec l'image du pouvoir. Ce fut le cas de l'Hôtel de Ville qui brûla le 24 Mai. Avec cet incendie, les archives et la bibliothèque de l'hôtel de ville partiront également en fumée.
Les deux collections d'État civil parisien antérieures à 1860 seront également perdues à jamais: la première demeurait dans l'hôtel de ville et la deuxième dans le palais de justice (qui fut également incendié). Suite à cet incendie, l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris était détruit à un point tel que ses ruines ne pouvaient pas être utilisées pour la reconstruction. C'est donc un monument entièrement nouveau qui fut élevé de 1874 à 1882.

Following the fire, the Hotel de Ville in Paris was destroyed to such an extent that its ruins could not be used for reconstruction. This is an entirely new monument was erected from 1874 to 1882.
